New Improved Pet Plus Ingredients

As more and more research is completed on the effectiveness of various nutrients and micronutrients, so new recommendations emerge for supplementing our own and our pets’ diets. Always keeping abreast of this new information, we are constantly improving the formulation of the Pet Plus for Dogs and the Pet Plus for Cats.
We have added antioxidant-rich bilberries and an excellent source of Fructo-Oligo-Saccharide (FOS) which is a very potent prebiotic, supporting both existing probiotics and the probiotics supplied in the Pet Plus. Safflower petals have a broader range of benefits than the seeds as a source of essential fatty acids and antioxidants, so we have returned to using this superior source.
Pet Plus has contained a tiny amount of garlic since its creation in 1996, but we have now decided to remove it. This has been such a long debate as garlic is well known to have many health benefits, but on balance, it is thought that it may be too much for some pet’s systems to deal with, even though we have never had any problems with it at all. So we have replaced its flea deterrent activity with Brewers Yeast. We have tried this new formulation for 6 months and found the dogs and cats remained flea-free which is great news.
Here are some more details about the new ingredients.

Bilberries

You have probably noticed the sudden increase in popularity of bilberries. They are rich sources of antioxidants, resveratrols and numerous other highly active micronutrients which all work together to protect our cells from free radical damage, inflammation and numerous other challenges.
Being naturally a dark blue-purple, the bilberries in Pet Plus make it look dark purple when you mix it with food.

Fructo-Oligo-Saccharides

Frurafit Inulin IQ is the source of the most effective of all the fructo-oligo-saccharides in a whole food form. It is a prebiotic, a nutrient that supports the probiotics which are the healthy bacteria living in the gut. Many people are moving towards just taking this prebiotic and no probiotics as it is so very good at supporting the existing healthy bacteria already inhabiting the gut. We decided to continue using the best colonising probiotic, Lactobacillus acidophilus, to ensure your pet’s probiotic flora are the best they can be. This dramatically impacts their ability to digest food and so aids a healthy digestive system, of great benefit to everyone within sniffing distance!

Hi For the very first time in my 47 years of rescuing border collies, i have, after the death of my 16 year old, Gypsy, decided to buy a pup. I am very responsible and feed my dogs good dried food containing salmon and rice. I want the best for my pup and want to make sure she has had the best start, with feeding. How do i do this to ensure her joints are protected? thanks

      Hi Helen,
Thanks for your question. I have two border collies too. Fabulous breed! They’re ten years old now and still tear around the farm like pups, absolutely full of energy!
I see you do agility where joint health is of great importance, as is the overall health and vitality. Water and food are the two key areas to look at.
A constant source of clean, chemical-free water is essential, so filtered tap water or bottled water (glass bottles not plastic as these leach mock oestrogens etc into the water), unless you’re lucky enough to be on clean well water or have your own spring.
Food needs to be as close to nature as possible, so we just need to think about what these dogs would eat in the wild. Raw meat, raw bone, chewed greens (in the guts of the herbivorous animals they would eat), offal (heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, brain, testicles, ovaries) and all the other micronutrients they would ingest.
So to make this easy to do at home, I use frozen packets of minced meat and bone (Prize Choice lamb, chicken, rabbit, beef ), mixed with liquidized greens (a variety of broccoli, spinach, kale, parsley, celery, cucumber, carrot tops, clean grass, dandelions and so on, but not rhubarb!) about half and half, and 1/2 teaspoonful of Pet Plus. They’ve been eating this since they were puppies and are still in prime health.
I vary this by adding a lamb heart once a week, a bit of organic lamb’s liver once a week, chunks of beef (2kg bags, Prize Choice) once or twice a week, organic meaty chicken carcasses once or twice a week (from Riverford Organics ), but I wouldn’t recommend any big meaty bones until her adult teeth have been through for about 6-9 months, so after she’s a year old. As a pup, you can cut up the carcasses and give her the rib cage and wishbone and the small meaty bones, which is what I do for the cats. You could use the rest to make stock, which is Riverford’s intention!
I wouldn’t ever advise feeding anything cooked or processed as all the nutrients are inevitably damaged in the process. Raw is the way to go, without a doubt.
      I hope that helps.
      Best wishes,
      Suzi

    Hi Susanna,
I want to thank you for the advice you gave me and the help you gave my black lab Dylan after suffering trauma to his teeth as chasing sticks had unfortunately developed into pulling up small shrubs by the roots! Since you fixed his teeth, and I have changed his diet in line with your advice, his energy and appetite have trebled! He is five now but seems to be back to his 2 year old self!
    Thank you!!
    Karen
